Development of Pedra Branca University City began in 1997 where, until that time, the land that occupied the largest and most developed venture of the region was part of a farm used for raising cattle. An opportunity for the implementation of an urbanization project on some 250 hectares of available land were noted due to the huge growth and urban potential of Greater Florianópolis. Thus, a new real estate concept was conceived in the region of Palhoça.
Aware of the need to have an anchor company to initiate the project and, at the same time, aware of the fact that Unisul was looking for a location to establish a new campus in Florianópolis, a partnership was created between the neighborhood and the university, through which Unisul gained a piece of land to implement the Pedra Branca Campus and the neighborhood was given the anchor it needed for its launch.
After more than 10 years, Pedra Branca University City defends the concept of Sustainable Urbanism, integrating a preoccupation for pedestrians with sustainable constructions and the quality of public areas, in addition to a complete high performance infrastructure developed for the areas of technology and health.
Silvia Lenzi, architect and consultant for the development concluded that the city "presents huge potential for becoming a first class urban center, as it is located in the coastal region of Santa Catarina, an area with the highest populational density in the state".
